Oh geez...

Here we go again.  The ability of "liberalism" to make people purblind is amazing:

Not the whole continent, of course, or even a majority of its residents, but there are a few hate-mongering, ignorant bigots in Uganda that need a wake-up call. They're trying to expand the death-penalty provisions in their already draconian anti-homosexual policies.

Actually, the numbers on anti-gay hatred in most of Africa are terrifying things to behold.  Even the ANC isn't immune (there is a strict limit to how much even Mandela was able to achieve).  Bother to listen to Douglas Murray on this subject and pay attention to the sort of numbers that are going around.  I particularly liked the comment by the Imam that 95% of the population of Uganda wants gays killed and that's democracy for you.

Here's the thing: I was reading Mencken's acerbic comments on the South of Ohio at the turn of the nineteenth century and it occurred to me that one could transplant a lot of that with the tribal lands of Pakistan today (c.f. Naipaul's Beyond Belief).  People change deeply across time and space.

Exit question: does anyone think that Myers would be this reticent about American evangelicals or the southern rednecks?
