In today’s Daily Beast, atheist activist and author Sam Harris takes a page from the Christian Right, declaring Islam a “threat to civil society” and condemning those who would uphold Constitutional principles of freedom of religion and equal protection.Ah, that advanced, Pharyngula level of comprehension and honesty! What did Sam Harris actually say?
This is not to say, however, that I think we should prevent our fellow citizens from building “the ground zero mosque.” There is probably no legal basis to do so in any case—nor should there be. But the margin between what is legal and what is desirable, or even decent, leaves room for many projects that well-intentioned people might still find offensive. So, where is he attacking Constitutional principles again? One can certainly say that the Mosque builders have a legal right to build it, in the same way that the KKK would have the legal right to build a new meeting hall on the site of a black church that was burned to the ground by racists in the '50s. That's not the same thing as saying one should say nothing about it.
Come back Nietzsche. Your people need you.
