This is pretty illustrative of the internal contradictions of the modern left. I agree that American defense spending is, in the words of Francis Wheen, staggeringly strange. However, Mr. Maher seems to have forgotten the time when he was banging on about the lack of troops and resources in Iraq.
And on the subject of internal contradictions, Mr. Maher might want to look into the numbers of people who are "in favor" of "doing something" about Darfur, Rwanda etc. and are still in favor of the "peace" crowd and leaving the United Nations to run things. As the Hitch pointed out, those promises, those statements about 'never again' were actually believed. People gambled their lives on those promises and they died without even being noticed.
